Are Basement Egress Windows Required in Pennsylvania?
In Pennsylvania, basement egress isn't just a home improvement—it's a legal safety requirement under the PA Uniform Construction Code Section R310.

Key PA Code Requirements:
- Safety First: Every basement, habitable attic, and sleeping room must have at least one operable emergency escape and rescue opening.
- Sizing for Rescue: Openings must provide a minimum net clear area of 5.7 square feet (or 5.0 square feet for grade-floor openings) to allow for emergency personnel entry and resident escape.
- Accessibility: The maximum sill height must be no more than 44 inches above the floor.
- Window Wells: If the window sill is below grade, a window well is required with a minimum horizontal area of 9 square feet and a permanent ladder or steps if the depth exceeds 44 inches.
